Vocalist Lila Ammons

"There have been many musical influences in my life, from family members to professional musicians, and I've inherited a wonderful legacy through the gifts of my grandfather and uncle: Albert Ammons (piano) and Gene Ammons (tenor sax).  Although I learned of this history some decades ago, I didn't publicize the fact until I had begun to find my way. I would love to contribute a fraction of what they left with us.

As a child, I wanted to become a cultural ambassador. Fortunately, my singing has taken me to many places where I've been able to share my interest and joy in music. I was formerly based in New York City, where I trained and began performing opera, oratorio and recitals. That was 33 years ago and it was the beginning of my international foray into the performing arts. I'm currently based in Minneapolis, Minnesota, where I've cultivated a career in jazz and blues music. I've performed in international jazz and blues festivals in Austria, Germany, Switzerland, The Netherlands, Brazil, Bulgaria, Italy, France, Belgium, England, Ireland, Spain, Minneapolis, Chicago, New York City, Cincinnati, Ohio, Michigan and Texas. Through my travels I've had the pleasure of working with many wonderful musicians, such as Axel Zwingenberger, Charlie Watts, Ben Waters, Jools Holland, Bruce Barth, Chris Jagger, Judy Carmichael, Sonny Leyland, and Tony Sola to name a few. In Minneapolis, I've performed with many of the area's finest musician.

My debut jazz recording, Nearness of You, includes Houston Person, James Weidman, Steve Williams, Leon Dorsey, Marvin Sewell, Onaje Allan Gumbs, and Michael Wimberly - all amazing musicians and people. I'm currently working on my second jazz CD project."
